Each is different from the next; it’s as though Dr. Suess pulled these sensational heirloom tomatoes out of a dream. Buying heirloom tomatoes for the first time can be intimidating because it’s hard to believe that such goodness is hidden within the irregularly shaped, not-your-average-tomato-looking tomato. Give it a try. I was delighted to learn from this creative sign at Whole Foods which provides a mini lesson on the types of heirloom tomatoes.
I took the recommendation on the sign and I gave these tomatoes a try with this recipe for quick heirloom tomato focaccia. Store-bought pizza dough provides the short-cut to this focaccia. Use heirloom cherry tomatoes or pick a few colorful tomatoes to sample the variety offered. My choice was led by colors– purple, red and orange caught my eye and the result was an artistic-feeling focaccia that we really enjoyed.
