How to Peel a Tomato

Have you planted your vegetable gardens yet? I hope you’ve included some tomatoes, this tip will come in handy later in the summer when you have more tomatoes than you could imagine! In the mean time, go ahead and do what I did this week: simply buy tomatoes in bulk from Costco and feel like you are in the midst of summer already.

Peeling tomatoes is often the first step before making tomato sauces and soups. It can be a fast and easy process; just take these simple steps and your tomatoes will practically peel themselves with little effort from you.

Step 1: Boil some water in a large pot.

Step 2: Prepare an ice bath in a bowl. Have this close by your boiling water.

Step 3: Make in “X” at the base of the tomato. This is the crucial step that gets the peeling process started.IMG_7618
Step 4: Gently drop a few tomatoes in to the boiling water; leave in for only 30 seconds at most.

Step 5: Take the tomatoes from the boiling water and place them directly in the ice bath. The skins will likely be starting to peel off of the tomato already. Simply help them along by lifting the tomato skins up towards the top of the tomato.

The peeling process is that quick and easy.IMG_7619

    1. Hi, thanks SO much for your comment. This method works just as well on peaches too. I am guessing it's worth trying on other types of fruit too (maybe apricots?). Have a great night! Holly

    1. Yes, the "X" marks the spot! Try this on peaches too and it works the same way. I hope to find other fruits throughout the summer to peel in this manner as well. I'd love to join your link up. Thanks!
